  • Author: Emma
  • Total Time: 2 hours
  • Yield: 2 loaves 1x
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

A soft and fluffy Amish white bread with a slightly sweet taste. Perfect for sandwiches, toast, or just eating plain with butter.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 2/3 cup white sugar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 6 cups bread flour

Instructions

  1. Dissolve sugar in warm water in a large bowl. Sprinkle yeast over the top and let it sit for 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Stir in salt and oil. Mix in flour one cup at a time until dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
  3. Knead dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  5. Punch down dough, divide in half, and shape into loaves. Place in greased 9×5-inch loaf pans.
  6. Let rise again until dough reaches the top of the pans, about 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown.

Notes

  • For a softer crust, brush melted butter on top after baking.
  • Store bread in an airtight container to keep it fresh.
  • You can replace part of the white flour with whole wheat flour for a heartier texture.
